Aerial View of the Kingston Row Flood Risk Zone

This aerial composite photo is worth the wait! This image provides an excellent view of one of the high flood risk areas this year within the City of Winnipeg. Ordinarily, river levels are not high enough to cause significant concern to these residents. Unfortunately, 1997 has not been an ordinary year.

If you refer to the photograph, you will see the start of the Red River in this area at the top right of the image. The river flows downward in the image, flows around the peninsula that contains Kingston Row and Kingston Crescent. As the river rounds the bottom tip of the peninsula, the old Elm Street Bridge can clearly be seen. This old bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic for many years (it was a single lane bridge when cars were allowed to cross it), but it has been popular with pedestrians and cyclists. Right now, the City of Winnipeg has closed this bridge due to concerns with the safety of the structure if it is struck by ice debris. As you follow the river downstream (up to the top left of your picture) the dual spans of the St.Vital Bridge come into view as the Red River proceeds downtown.

The efforts shown on the Kingston Row Page of this site were focused on constructing a sandbag dike along the perimeter of the peninsula shown in the photo. Truly an ambitious task, however the residents are mobilized and ready for the challenge.
